There are many ways to build a good cleric both generally in pathfinder and particularly in WotR thanks to the mythic paths. My favorite build for mercenary cleric so far is a crusader, which loses a domain selection and gets extra feats, that uses greatswords and heavy armor with community domain.

Player is freely able to choose mercenaries over story companions, like in Varnhold. Though a reasonable limit should be preserved. It also helps since your most powerful spells are usually 'vs living' meaning you can't really just nuke your enemies without nuking your frontline of living.
