As the third oldest concrete dam in the world, after Boyds Corner Dam (New York State, United States of America) and Lac de Perolles Dam (Switzerland), both constructed in 1872, and the oldest in Australia.

What is now the Boyds Corner Reservoir was once a fertile valley owned by the Haight, Light, Parker, and Bailey families. Before that, it was the land of Native Americans. All of these people settled on the banks of the West Branch of the Croton River. That river has been greatly altered by a series of dams and reservoirs.Concrete--now on the basis of Portland cement--was used for the first time since the Romans for the Boyds Corner gravity dam completed in 1872 in New York. The Lower Crystal Springs Dam in California, completed in 1890, was the first dam in which the water content of the concrete was specifically controlled. The West Branch and Boyds Corner reservoirs in Putnam County will remain full to act as a reserve during the shutdown period. The East Branch, Bog Brook, and Middle Branch reservoirs in Putnam; and the Cross River, Titicus and Amawalk in Westchester are expected to be drawn down more than average to augment the water supply.
